14 year old Fresh Aspirations member Beckie, despite her trepidation, confronted her fears and embraced the challenge of delivering a presentation to a room full of business people. Here’s what she had to say about the experience:
How did you feel when you were offered the opportunity to present to SCB Breakfast Club?
When I was offered to present a speech on behalf of FAC at the SCB Breakfast club I immediately said yes. I felt as though this could build my confidence as well as give me experience.
Is it something you would have volunteered for if you were in a room with other people and not asked directly?
I would normally just let someone else take the role if I wasn’t asked directly so I’m happy that I was asked personally.
Would you volunteer now if you were asked the same thing in a crowded room?
I would like to think I would volunteer if I was in a crowded room. Now that I have the experience I have no reason not to step forward.
How did you prepare for this experience?
I prepared by going over my speech and asked a couple of friends to sit in front of me as I read it out to give me pointers.
How did it go?
I, personally, think it went very well and I achieved on getting across what I wanted to say.
What did it feel like before, during and after presenting?
Before presenting I was extremely nervous – I had no idea what was going to happen. During I didn’t really feel anything. I just focused on what I was saying and the people around me. I was relieved after the speech and I was very proud of myself.
Has it made a difference to you?
It has made a difference to me because now I know that I have the ability to stand up in front of people that I haven’t met before and speak out about anything.
I hope that this leads to more presentations so I can really build on my confidence when it comes to speeches.
Is there any advice you would offer to young people presented with similar opportunities – should they do it, how should they prepare…?
If you are given an opportunity like this – take it. You may feel anxious and as though you would rather do anything else but stand in front of random strangers and talk but honestly there is nothing to worry about. When it comes to preparing just go over your notes/ speech again and again until you get to general gist of it – talk in front of family members, friends even pets. Just be confident and don’t doubt.
