On 20th May, myself and Erica Nathan, another Fresh Aspirations member, had the opportunity to go to the Women’s Tour of Britain press night and interview two of the cyclists competing and the owner of their team, Matrix Fitness. The event was held at Thorpeness Country Club and we were given the chance to talk to the cyclists (Lucy Martin – an Olympian and Helen Wyman – a European cyclocross champion) and the owner (Stefan Wyman) about a variety of issues, such as the tour itself, feminism in cycling and what inspires them.

As a cycling fan this was an amazing experience to meet some of Britain’s top sports stars but it was also a useful insight behind the scenes of the sport and enabled us to see how much commitment is needed from the athletes – Stefan and Helen have moved to Belgium so that they can minimise the distance travelled to European races. It was also excellent practise for interviews that we may have to do in the future, particularly job interviews or ones at university.

The cliche ‘a once in a lifetime experience’ is so overused but this evening really was and it has definitely encouraged me to go to watch the first stage of the Women’s Tour of Britain in Aldeburgh on 17th June.
